Contact was started in 1978 by a group of young Ruddington mums. It was set up to be a social organisation for new mothers to meet in the evenings at various members’ houses. The meetings have been held every fortnight since that time and the programme is varied – talks, quizzes, outings, theatre visits and so on. There’s also a book club. Members take it in turns to organise the year’s programme, which runs from September to July.
This year, to celebrate our 40th year, a trip was organised to the Spanish city of Valencia. 13 members of the group set out on April 30th for a four day visit. The city afforded a lot of interesting sights, from the stunning modern architecture of the City of the Arts and Sciences to the historic centre. The city is also famous for its paella and sangria, both of which were enjoyed by the group.
Contact has 24 members at present and nearly all of them still live in the village. Various anniversaries have been celebrated over the years. For our 25th anniversary, we organised a visit to New York; our 30th anniversary saw a visit to Bruges; and for the 35th, it was a visit to Paris. Who knows where our 45th anniversary will be celebrated?
