The doldrums (sometimes spelt dolddrums) is the name used for a low-pressure area around the equator where in calm periods the winds can disappear altogether and years ago would trap sail-powered boats for periods of days or weeks.
Many people feel that they are “in the doldrums” early in the year, when the weather is poor, nights are long and there doesn’t seem to be much to look forward to until Spring. So this is an excellent time to take up a new hobby, join a club, learn a skill or just get fit. The Parish Council’s venues are used for a huge variety of groups and classes, and frequently has new things starting.
There is Zumba, Tai Chi, Pilates, Karate and Dance Classes for all ages. If you are looking for something less active, there are Craft Classes, a Knitting Group, Bridge and even a Lacemakers Group (self-help, not teaching). Then there’s the History Society, the Women’s Institute, the Ladies’ Probus Club and the Western Front Association who all hold meetings with interesting speakers and a chance to make new friends with similar interests.
