On His Majesty’s 75th birthday last November we reported the very happy news that individuals and groups volunteering at Ruddington’s Framework Knitters’ Museum (FWKM) had been awarded the prestigious King’s Award for Voluntary Service (KAVS).
This is the highest royal accolade a local voluntary group can receive in the UK, and is equivalent to an MBE. FWKM was one of 262 local charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to receive our new King’s first awards in 2023.
Their work, along with others from across the UK, aims to remind us about all the ways volunteers are contributing to their local communities, and working to make life better for those around them.
On Sunday 9th June, museum volunteers gathered at the historic Chapel Street premises to be officially presented with their KAVS Award by Nottingham’s new Lord Lieutenant, Professor Veronica Pickering (pictured, courtesy of FWKM).
A museum spokesperson said: “Thanks to all our volunteers and friends/supporters of the museum who attended, including Rushcliffe Borough Council, amongst others. We couldn’t do it without you. Thanks also to Philo’s for catering and the sunshine for making an appearance!”
The KAVS Award is not only in recognition of the considerable amount of work done by the museum’s volunteers and trustees, but also the other volunteer groups who meet there, including Ruddington Gardeners Club, Nature in Mind, The Ruddington Yarn Ninjas and the Second Turning Textile Group.
The museum currently has extended opening hours for the summer. Over the next few months, it’s open Wednesday to Saturday from 11am to 4pm and on Sundays from 1.30pm to 4pm. You can find more details at www.frameworkknittersmuseum.org.uk.
