In the same way that out of town shopping centres encircle our modern cities, our own extended village now has many businesses well away from the busy high street that we should remember to support. If you head away from the centre, down Clifton Road, and around Camelot Street you’ll find a surprising variety of trades being carried out along Brookside Road!
For example, did you know that Ruddington is home to the country’s only surviving Barmen Lace manufacturer? Founded in 1965 Malmic Lace moved to the 1.7 acre site on Brookside Road in 1993. Here 200 lace machines produce the UK’s only lace as well as speciality trimmings for the fashion industry, elastic and rigid braid. The company designs many of its own products and exports to over 30 countries around the world. So if you’re searching for TRUE Nottingham lace this is the only brand to look out for!
For more general needlework Creative Embroidery can be found along at Unit 4. But in getting there you’ll pass Near & Far Storage & Removals, Elaine Langridge’s Accounting and Secretarial Business, the recently opened Brookside Autoservices, Prestige Maids cleaning and ironing company and Melbourne Flooring Contractors! Then, if you look a little further back, you’ll also find IT company Basic Business Systems and bespoke furniture manufacturers Reflective Designs. Last, but not least, there’s SPR Racing – another of Ruddington’s best kept secrets – which attracts customers from right across the country to rebuild and service their high performance motorbikes using its’ state of the art tuning facilities.
There really is much more to Ruddington than initially meets the eye – and we’ll unearth some more surprises next month!
