On Thursday 8th May, the 80th anniversary of VE Day, members of Ruddington Royal British Legion (RBL) attended the short ceremony held at the War Memorial, with two Standard Bearers, Louise Mote and John Pidgeon, along with the Chairman and Vice Chairman, Matt Mason-Hill and Jazz Mason-Hill.
RBL also “planted” a total of 385 poppies on St Peter’s Rooms lawn and in the Memorial Garden to represent and acknowledge those from Ruddington and surrounding villages involved with securing our freedom during the War.
The poppies were made from up-cycled plastic bottles and hand painted and assembled; it’s hoped that we’ll repeat the display later in the year.
Also, we’re busy planning and preparing for a poppy cascade in the church yard for the November Armistice – Remembrance Sunday – and are hoping that those who are creative will get busy knitting poppies to be donated. We can supply an easy-to-follow pattern.
As this year has been the 80th anniversary of both Victory in Europe and Victory in Japan, the Branch will be holding a 1940s themed Victory Tea Dance in the Village Hall on Saturday 16th August, with music, dancing, and of course endless cups of tea and cake! Everyone will be welcome to wear 1940s style outfits. Tickets will be available soon.
