On 6th May, Severn Trent proudly illuminated Derwent Dam in red, white, and blue as part of the VE Day commemorations. This tribute honoured the Dambusters, who trained over the dam in 1943, flying as low as 60 feet to practice dropping replicas of the bouncing bombs in preparation for their raids on German dams.
These poignant scenes were part of a series of national events where historic buildings, including Buckingham Palace and Downing Street, were also lit up to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
Severn Trent is so proud that Derwent Dam played such a key part in the Dambusters story and wanted to recognise the bravery of all those involved, and the sacrifices made by so many during this mission and the Second World War.
The company is a huge supporter of our armed forces and employs many veterans, a number of whom have helped arrange the VE Day commemoration events.
Upper Derwent Valley is a stunning visitor attraction, where quiet wooded valleys meet wild open spaces around three majestic reservoirs in the Peak District.
It’s yours to explore and enjoy the rich history, breathtaking landscapes, invigorating walks, wildlife watching, and so much more.
